This. This moment right here. This is what I’ve been waiting for since the first season. Elena Gilbert, with no sire bond and nothing but free will, choosing Damon. I remember being furious with Julie Plec earlier this season when the sire bond became a plot point. Finally giving the fans Delena, only to laugh in our faces and say, “Um sorry but she might not even truly love him, it might just be his blood inside of her and his sire bond over her that’s making her choose him, lol sucks for you guys.” But no. That’s not what the writers were doing at all. You see, Damon and Elena is so OTP because their road is rough. It’s scary and it’s tough and it’s REAL. They didn’t just meet in a high school classroom and fall in love in the span of 5 episodes. They took time. They took YEARS. They’ve been through hardships that most couples would not be able to overcome. But here they are, in all their glory, choosing each other.
I’m not saying that Stefan and Elena weren’t a good couple. I agree with Lexi, they had an epic love. But love like theirs doesn’t always last. Sometimes something not better, but different comes along. That’s all Elena has ever wanted. Passion. The unpredictable. A love like Damon’s that makes her question everything she is and everything she stands for. Stefan was easy to be with, but true love isn’t easy. Easy isn’t always better.
Stefan had Katherine way back when. She truly loved him, and him alone. Then Elena fell for Stefan too. And Damon was left alone and unloved, the same way he’s lived for over 170 years. Every day of his human and vampire life. Desperate for love and ultimately alone. That’s why he’s bitter and intense and irrational at times. Because he’s hurt and he’s guarded. But Elena saw this. She grew to see and love Damon for what he truly is, and she accepted it and she took him into her heart because he needed her love. And in return she found that she needs his kind of love right back. The passionate, unpredictable, fierce love that she’s never quite felt before. She felt how much she needed his love in return. And now it’s his turn. Now it’s finally Damon’s turn to be the one who’s loved unconditionally, the one who gets to have his own epic love story. He finally got the girl.
